IB Downtime

By the way, I've been testing the ib demo system. I cant figure out why it hangs on my pc, when I close one of the windows.

I tried it on other people's pc and it works ok. I tried my pc without much of any thing on it and still doesnt work. Does nvidia's geforce card have problems with the platform or something I am using?

Hope someone can help.

Look at the brand of network card. IB has an approved list. This problem is legendary with IB and network cards.

FWIW,
I have no problem logging in and placing orders. However, if you look at the below link which reports internet traffic/latency amongst the major US ISP backbones, you'll see SPRINT is or was having serious latency problems. LEVEL3 is also not doing so well at the moment.

edit: just went back to look at the site. it looks like UUNET<-> SPRINT is the major problem. Also UUNET<->LEVEL3

Ugh,

This explains it - when I said that it worked from one computer and not the other, I forgot that I changed the other (the one that works) to my second DSL line...

nitro :(

I dont know what's wrong. I tried it on my roommates pc and it worked, so I know the NIC is ok since we bot the stuff at the same time when we hooked up to the dsl connection.

Dont know if its the java, I got the plug in from the ib site so should be ok, though I did have ms java on my pc before installing the sun java. Dont know if that matters.

Really weird.

This morning's fiasco was yet another occurrence of the same old Alternet (UUNet) routing problem that's been happening periodically for over a year. If the path between you and your destination includes the *.NYC.* Alternet routers, you were probably affected. Unfortunately, for much of the country, that includes IB.

Look at www.internettrafficreport.com . The problem this morning created a major spike in packet loss and total traffic (downward) in North America, affecting a very large percentage of internet traffic.

Sometimes, your ISP can make a difference, as odd as that seems, because things may get routed differently from one ISP than another, and avoid the bad routers, once they hit Alternet, but even this is not reliable.

This morning, for example, I was sometimes able to reach IB through my backup dialup ISP when my cable ISP couldn't get there, but sometimes not.

arzoo -are you running the latest Java 1.4.x ? IB's latest builds require it over 1.3.x

Yup. Actually, tried 3 of them, started with the 1.3 in ib's site, then 1.4.1 and read about some guys hangind on the ib discussion board so tried the 1.4.0, but all still the same.

I wrote to tac@interactivebrokers.com but no reply yet. I did notice though that what happens is Iexplore is what hangs (when I press ctrl-alt-del) it is always that one that is not responding.

By the way, does ib's platform work behind a proxy server? coz i tried it on a pc behind one & the demo wouldnt log in, but on the pc with the proxy server it went through, and worked ok, but hung later on.

Is there a way around the proxy thing?

Thanks.
