IB uses a low level socket connection. Any internet storm or latency will cause that connection to get dropped. Most Windows users need to adjust their RWIN in order to prevent this latency condition. The RWIN default in Windows is set too high and causes the >2sec latency condition which is a reason why some users are getting dropped connections.
Go www.dslreports.com/tools/ and run the tweak test. If you get the >2sec latency condition, download Dr. TCP and adjust your RWIN number according to the web site.
European and Asian users may benefit from turning on timestamps also explained in the FAQ.
The Dr. TCP tweak FAQ- http://www.dslreports.com/faq/578
Here is a link which discusses RWIN ranges. For the most stable connection pick the lowest RWIN number that the tweak test won't complain about. The idea is to give up a little capacity in order to lower latency.
