Although I generally agree with what you're saying it depends on the market making program in play. Some of the mini contracts for metals and energy actually are fairly decent (although I recommend people stick to the full size ones if they have the margin/account for them). If CME has a decent market making program in play for these then they can be a viable product.

One reason you should trade these over the ETFs? 1256 contract taxation with no ambiguity, SPAN margin offsetting (for spreads), better margins, and Globex hours.
