IB Digital Security Card Expected Battery Life

I had a silver I think. The black device with grey buttons. It lasted a bit over 15 years and was still going strong when IB made me convert to the new setup. I used it an average of 1.5 times per day 6 days a week for a bit over 15 years. They were shocked that I still had it.

15 years, pretty impressive. I dont think the credit card sized ones will last that long. Mine runs for 3 years now with once daily usage.

I don't know anybody without a phone. I don't think the type of people trading stocks over the internet come in the no-phone-for-me variety.

The app works fine - it is probably just not as secure as the digital cards because a phone could potentially be hacked, while the digital cards can not.

That too.

One reason: Out-of-band authentication gives you an additional layer of security.

I don't get it. You mean, they requested it back when the battery was empty? There is a 20 USD replacement fee I believe if you loose it.

So I was using the card and only needed it when I logged into computer. For my phone didn’t need it for some reason??

Not sure what I pressed but there is an authentication through the phone.I think once I enabled it. I got a message from them they wanted the card back or that fee...

That’s my experience with the card. I think it’s horrible and anyone doing self trading so at least have a phone. Or buy on with the income you receive.... makes you feel sorta cool but is totally not convenient

Let’s think for a second on someone “hacking your phone”. First they would need your phone. Second they would need to know you have an IB account. Third they would need a password to your phone. Fourth they can’t physically transfer anything on the phone, All the could do is trade on the phone. Fifth you need the password to your IB account. Sixth they would need to ( for my phone ) have my head or trick the face recognition, everyone else I believe is your thumb print for second verification?? So lop your finger off somehow and at that point I don’t think you would care about your IB account. This is really no different then someone grabbing that card to access your account, and really once they do that they have access to transfer where with phone the extra layer is needing your head or fingerprint which to me is much safer and harder.

Let’s leave someone getting into your account to do what, I don’t know... to tv shows like CSI. hahahahaha

Thanks for that info sprstpd. I still have the original card with the non-clicky touch buttons. How old is that card with the clicky buttons? Are the button raised now or is it still flat like a credit card? Any other changes? I've read here somewhere a year ago that they plan to use a different LCD display on it?

I hate the gold design, but love the design of their their new credit card. I can't wait for them to release a new version with the new corporate identity. Weird that I care? Sure. Still do.

How do you guys keep the card secure? I don't want to just stick it in my wallet like a credit card and have it fall out. Interestingly the manufacturer website linked above says you can punch a hole in it in certain locations. This way it could be secured from accidental loss.

The new card is probably 1.5 years old now for me. It is still like a credit card but the buttons have a little clicky tactile feedback unlike the previous card. I can't remember exactly, but the I think the new card has a bigger IB logo and looks a little better. I do nothing special to keep it secure, and as I said, I use the phone app most of the time now.

I like the card size design - can put it in my wallet, but the number keys are hard to click.
In most cases I use IBKey unless i need to withdraw 20K+ etc.
