i7-900s vs Xeon processors - identical?

So 36GB would cost you roughly $1k. You can get non-ecc RAM for much cheaper though.

Peak depends on what its used for. Most of the time it only uses 1-3gb but when I run simulations overnight it can get up to 28-29gb when it loads all of the parameters into memory. So probably 12 hours a day its loaded up and 12 hours its idling at 1.5-3gb used.

36GB of RAM is about $1K now... I was thinking you'd had that rig for a while and RAM might have been even more when you got it.
 
nope, got the thing just about a year ago from Dell Outlet - thats what it came with.

I did just learn however, that ECC RAM usually runs at one speed lower than listed on the sticks. So apples to apples 1GB of 1333 ECC will run slower than 1GB of 1333 non-ECC.

No, it is like using a Ferrari to deliver pizzas for living. No business I know of purchases machines that are more powerful than needed. It is like buying a 16 wheeler because one day you will move to another state and will surely need it to transport your stuff.
 
the "super computer" mentality associated with HFT is a farse. many people can locate cheap Q9650 machines or even E8400/E8600 machines in very close proximity to the execution servers and compete easily on a $500 system in the HFT space - its the connectivity and networking thats expensive, not the hardware.
 
Guys, I recently upgraded to the i7 950 chip with and MSI motherboard and 6 gigs of DDR3 ram. I run esignal. This set-up is awesome.

I process a lot of tick data for the Dax and ESTX50 and this thing peaks at 6% CPU utilisation.

Because I store the tick data in memory I need the extra ram.

Highly recommend this chip combo. Even on a single threaded application like esignal the difference is incredible.

The 950 chip offers the best performance to value ratio IMO.

I bought a gateway FX series gaming computer, upgraded power supply and added extra video card, I run 4 monitors with no problems. It has a i-7 -920 and 6 giga bits of DDR3 ram. The system works great.
 
I upgraded from a Core2duo with 2gigs of DDR2 ram and Asus motherboard. Which used to run at 30% of CPU for the same esignal set-up, but it didn't multitask as well.

The new set-up with run esignal and my broker software and play you tube videos all the same time without freezing.

Difference between Core2Duo and i7 architecture is a quantum leap! Good choice ;)
 
Newegg has a core i7 laptop for $899 with a $100 rebate, bringing the price down to $799.

has anyone had success with the core i5?

regarding using it for trading applications and such?
