WASHINGTON – Democratic nominee Joe Biden said that if he were president, he would shut the country down to stop the spread of the coronavirus, if that were recommended by scientists.

“I would be prepared to do whatever it takes to save lives, because we cannot get the country moving until we control the virus. That is the fundamental flaw of this administration’s thinking to begin with,” the former vice president told ABC News' David Muir in a clip of an interview released Friday.

“I would shut it down. I would listen to the scientists,” he said.

It’s about time to have a President who acts like one. The markets recovered amazingly well but is that sustainable if we can’t send kids to school , travel , go to dinner etc?
As a trader the best we can do is protect our portfolio appropriately and take advantage of any opportunities, long and short. At the end it doesn’t really matter. If the country shutdown again some stocks will go up, some will go down, some people will still make money and other lose. How is that different from today?

They can do a "lockdown lite" but the problem is the re-opening...not the lockdown.

If the re-opening is done poorly, too early or its via population that are socially irresponsible...it defeats the purpose of having a lockdown in the first place.

Simply, you don't want to re-open the way some countries re-open like China, South Korea in which they carted off violators to jail, public home arrests dragging people out of their homes and using drones to fly over neighbourhoods to find people walking around without wearing a face mask just so they can be identified via facial recognition software to send them a fine by mail. :D

Thus, the re-opening process is just as important but Americans forgot about it whereas other countries put most of their emphasis on the re-opening process and are now getting back to normal while the U.S. is failing poorly.

If and when a vaccine is develop...its going to be the wild wild west show all over again. :(

Shutdowns do nothing to solve the problem. It is a temporary bandaid solution worse than the disease. Wear a mask, wash your hands and face, use hand sanitizer and take a hot bath with soap when you get back from the grocery store. Take some vitamins, zinc gluconate, vitamin C, vitamin E to boost your immune system. Vitamin C and Vitamin E has been shown effective against some forms of cancer as an added benefit. Businesses if they are smart, will move their operations online. Most tasks nowadays can be done online. People need to adapt and protect yourselves.

Many countries can / are doing that.

Unfortunately, the U.S. is not one of them even though it has the tools to be one of the leaders instead of one of the bottom tiers in the coronavirus fight.

As for businesses...the business aspect of managing a business can be done online but the manufacturing / service aspect can not which is why many millions are still without a job.

For example, the dry cleaners in my neighbourhood is still shut down (closed)...a family business with about 5 employees. Most of their clientele are business folks. Go tell them to move their cleaning online. :D

In another city, there's an aluminum making company...employs almost the entire town. Go tell them to adapt and move online. :D

You only have to look at the Philippines where the military is being used to lock people indoors for long periods of time. The Philippine government continues to do that without providing monetary aid to the people being locked up. When your body is weak due to hunger, how are you supposed to survive the Corona Virus? Despite, the military shutting down everything, practically, it has just made more people poor in the Philippines.
Shutting down is a dumb solution because people still have to earn a living to eat. Starving people only, makes them more vulnerable to getting the Corona Virus with their weak immune system. People still have to go to the grocery store, pharmacy, post office, etc. The economic toll is going to be worst with the lost jobs which are not coming back.

You are the one who favors a shutdown not me. I think it is extremely stupid, 1,000% even now.
