I hated government -- even as it was the only thing trying to save me. Here's how, one day, I finally saw the light more . . .
I was still paying little if any income tax, but I believed in âfairness.â
I voted libertarian that election year (2008), even though the utter failure of the free market was obvious
The financial crisis proved that rich people are no better than me, and in fact, are often inferior to average people. They crash companies, loot pensions and destroy banks, and when they hit a snag, they scream to be rescued by government largess.
By contrast, I continued to pay my oversize mortgage for years, even as my home lost more than half its value.
LOL!
Except that market wasn't free. It was cronyism - the same cronyism Obama promised all of us he would end (I remember, I voted for him then).
Exactly. Nothing free about that. That's socialized losses. But it was the government that allowed them to be bailed out. The same government this guy is praising.
Yeah, this is someone else's fault, right? God forbid we take ownership for our own stupidity.
The rest of the article is the story of an ignorant fool who has no idea how government truly works, who is really to blame for his "ills" and his passing the buck to bad, rich people because they are (all of them) responsible for where we are. Oh, and Obama rulez thx.
Pile of steaming horseshit, and what is expected from Salon these days.
I too fail to see what is so inspiring about this guy .... at age 19 he gets an 18 year old pregnant and they have a kid a year later --- not smart buddy! Then they drop out of school. Then he whines about having no money. More complaining saying he got ripped off on a car loan. Then he pays next to no taxes. But he takes WIC, subsidized housing, subsidized utilities. And plenty of people ended up underwater on mortgages. He chose to live in Nevada, I doubt anyone held a gun to his head and forced him to buy a house. High probability he's getting a subsidy for Odumbocare. Going through life whining has to be a rather sad existence.
Seriously, I didn't read the article. Why waste my time? But life is not easy these days for people on the bottom of the economic ladder. Working class people used to be able to earn a decent income working construction, factory jobs, retail, etc.
Now you can't get half those jobs unless you're hispanic. Go by any construction site and tell me how many white guys you see. Not many, if it's like around here.
So called free trade, ie send all our jobs to China, decimated manufacturing. Government regulators work overtime, well ok no one works overtime in government, it's a figure of speech, to target he remaining employers and drive them out of business. Except for the Obama donors and cronies of course. They get Energy Department sweetheart loans.
You used to be able to raise a family safely in a low income neighborhood and at least count on sending your kids to a decent enough school. No more. The majority of affordable housing now is in dangerous areas with terrible schools. Move there if you want your kids to grow up illiterate amid gangs, drugs, etc.
People make their own choices and sometimes they don;t work out. Some paths predictably lead to bad outcomes. But let's not kid ourselves. These days kids from upper middle class and above families have a lot more advantages than they did when boomers were growing up. There was always a disparity between the haves and have nots, but it wasn't so wide we couldn't see across it and it wasn't uncommon to cross it. These days, that gulf is more like an ocean. Crossing it without a lot of luck and help is not easy.
The great irony is this stratification of society and destruction of the working class' opportunities occurred during the period of great liberal hegemony. LBJ kicked off the War on Poverty, what a joke, during the 1960's, and it has been pretty much downhill since for those who get their hands dirty.
