FRANCE'S first lady broke with protocol today as she held out a frosty hand to welcome Barack Obama.
Stunning Carla Bruni was business-like in her greeting â while her hubby treated the US President's wife to a hug and Continental double kiss.
The former model gave pecks on both cheeks to Michelle Obama and other dignatories when the couple arrived in France.
But when it came to the dashing US President the beauty kept a noticeable distance.

Mr and Mrs Obama flew in to Strasbourg's majestic 18th-century Rohan Palace this morning to meet with President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The meeting was being held before the formal start of the NATO allianceâs 60th anniversary summit.

Sarkozy rolled out all the pomp possible for the visit, with a red carpet arrival and full military honours from a company of soldiers dressed in camouflage.
The two couples lined up to listen to their respective national anthems played by a French military band but even in his trademark stacked heels Mr Sarkozy was a sight for smaller eyes.
The French supremo at 5ft 6ins was no match for his ex supermodel wife and even taller Mrs Obama, who both donned flat shoes for the occasion.
Mr Obama later gave a speech ahead of the NATO summit that he is setting a dramatic goal of âa world without nuclear weaponsâ.
The President opened a town-hall style gathering with the declaration, saying he would outline details in Prague in the coming days.
He said: âEven with the Cold War now over, the spread of nuclear weapons or the theft of nuclear material could lead to the extermination of any city on the planet.â
Mr Obama said that the US shares blame for the crisis, but that âevery nation bears responsibility for what lies ahead - especially now".
He added: âIâve come to Europe this week to renew our partnership. America is changing but it cannot be America alone that changes.â

Your first paragraph makes no sense to me and has nothing to do with my observation. Further, I don't think that the Far Right can claim "above average" performance in any arena, so let's not go there, shall we?
As for Obama's actions, I don't suggest that you or anyone else be enamored by each and every of his actions. However, the visceral dislike for him displayed by some, shall we say, groups is palpable. And when you guys finally have a prez at the helm that the world approves of, rather than at least take a bit of pride in that, some of you guys piss on him at every turn. I think it shows bad form, especially in light of general international response.
What we've seen is what we expected. The President, his media groupies and the usual suspects on the left are engaged in a vivacious circle jerk. From our Euro brothers, it's business as usual. America will do all the heavy lifting while they sit in the cheap seats, critiquing every move and shouting obscenities like some drunken fan at a football game. At best they'll offer up token gestures as it suits their own best interests.
The faces have changed, but the game remains the same.
Hopefully, it will get a bit better than that. Bush alienated much of the world by casually throwing his weight around. What other response would you have expected? Obama seems less inclined to do so. It looks like he will genuinely endeavor to build multilateral cooperation. At least he's starting on the right foot. We'll just have to see how it plays out.
