I need to find a licensed fencing contractor in my area...

You think this would be easy...But I am having the hardest time.

I do not trust Angie's List or Yelp!! Google reviews are good...But not great.

The local Realtor I've used is sort of new...Doesn't have a clue.

It's just two gates and a fence between my neighbor's and my (a rental) place. We will go redwood and good quality. I am looking for a "good" "licensed" contractor. It doesn't have to be great work. My neighbors (our house), went to Loews for a fence and the contractor. The problem is the contractor took what wood Loews give him...Garbage and good wood. I would rather go with the local wood distributor and good (great) wood.

If I was a member of a local Kiwanis or Rotary clubs, I could network that way.

NO ONE NETWORKS ANYMORE!!

I'm thinking...Just ask one Realtor after another. They have to network or they know people who know people...

Contact general building contractors in your area.
They're always hiring different trades to do construction work on new homes, including fences.
The general contractors I worked for would know who could put up a quality fence.

Rode my bicycle...Chewing on what you said (my away time).

I only know one general (retired). If a general said they could do it, I would wonder why they aren't busy...And when was the last time they built two gates??

Also a general's subs would not be cheap. They do custom homes and demand good quality work from their subs. I am dealing with a entry level rental...Nice neighborhood, but nothing fancy (house built in 2000). Something that a future tenant (parents with small kids) would be comfortable having their kids run around in...

But the idea of a general, to ask for subs, is a good one...

Drive, walk, or bike around your area while looking for the names of fence companies on fences that are old but still in good condition. Then contact those companies for estimates.

Yeah, I know a couple of guys that are better than many generals. I have to present the generals cards to the neighbor (a levelheaded nurse). Also living in CA if you get caught/accident (sued), it can become a real headache...

Again, it's not just my fence...It's our fence.

Well, for a small job a good contractor should go in and handpick his own wood; for a large job, you simply don't use the crappy boards, Lowes or HD will readily replace. If you had the lumber delivered, they'll even send a truck to do it.

Good move on your part to use redwood on a privacy fence. Or cedar. Treated rough-cut pine (way cheaper) will shrink and you'll have 1/4 inch+ gaps between the boards that were fit tightly against each other originally in a month.
