I might have to pay $10,000 back in college education

Although I live in a country where college education is free.

Like not only the state didn't ask for money, they provided me with housing (a students boarding house) for free and on top of that a $cholar$hip paid every month which amounted to some half the minimum income for employed working class at the time.

So how come I might owe them money? I enrolled in an extra endeavour afterwards to complete a math PhD, for which they paid me an additional $10,000 over the years.

Problem is I never finished it and the deadline to finish is approaching soon :p

It's pretty though, mathematics, not some software PhD wank.

It would require more effort that I'm willing to put in for the reward involved.

It's not that I don't study/research but if something is coming out of this it's first and foremost making a lot of money for myself. And truth be told while not trivial it's not exactly some breakthrough in science.
 
I heard about such a situation and it sounds so weird. Like. Where is any warning of that? And, honestly, the educational system is worse and worse over the years. When I studied, I needed to pay my study bills, housing, and all other stuff. I even decided to find a job, because my parents couldn't deal with it by themselves. And now I don't understand what I got from this education... Better I did as you - not finished it.

It's a clumsy and antiquated way to ensure your investments stay local.

The State pumps a funkton of money into education and understandably isn't happy when the best ones defect. But that's just as unavoidable as having the worst ones leaving for greener pastures.

What you want as a State is the best of the best ones staying. In Soviet Russia for instance, because conditions for those caliber engineers even in the Gulag made the word "engineer" reach higher status then the very valuable "doctor".

It sounds like you were very fortunate to have access to free college education, housing, and a scholarship in your country. In any case, when you don't feel the benefits of such education, there is no reason to continue.
