I LOVE the HSI futs!

Hi Big Game Hunter,

I assume you are looking at April's contract.

Yes the spread can easily be 5 or more points, but is ussually around 2 or 3. It also goes down to 1 many times.

IB has nothing to do with it, it is nature of Hang Seng.

For clarification:

U.S. residents are NOT allowed to trade the mini-HSI??

Which mini (asian) contracts can U.S. residents trade?

And if anyone wouldn't mind providing some insight, which asian contracts are suitable for someone in the GMT -6 time-zone?

thanks in advance!

Michael

Im just about to open an account with IB. However I checked the demo and noticed that the spread on the demo for the full size HSI futures was around 5 Hang Seng points. Is this usual? I was under the impression the spread was a single index point but that it whipped around a lot because of this narrow spread. Is the spread usually one or 5 index points?

IB's demo is not what you normally see with IB .... it is very thin data really only suitable for seeing how TWS works.

I trade the mini hang seng. It is nothing like the emini S&P. It is more like mini gold and big gold. It tracks the big hang seng with extra 1 tick on either side. During fast markets, u will probably need to get to the 5's and 10's to get guarantee fill. But with that being said, IMHO, The spread is still pretty narrow given the volatility. If u compare the nikkei which has a smaller range has a 5 pt and sometimes 10 pt spread. Trading mini hang seng on a 1 -2 lot is fine. Anything more than that, u should be trading the big contract.

Not sure what you are talking about here with regard to the nikkei. Spread is almost almost almost always 1 tick. Remember it trades in 5 pt increments. Your post, to me, implies that the nikkei has spreads of 5 or more ticks often - which it certainly does not.

Best regards,
MK

HSI often has spread of 5 points and more. But it is usually at 2-3.

Anyone heard any news on allowing US residents to trade KOSPI contracts?

Its a lovely contract to trade and it has the bonus of short hours. The first session is 2 3/4 hours then you get a decent lunch break before a second session of 1 3/4 hours.

You don't need long hours to make money (thank heavens).

Mini-Nikkei trades in 5 point increments, full-Nikkei trades with 10 point increment on Osaka exchange, while the Singapore version of the full Nikkei trades with 5 point increment but is worth half as much.

But yeah, spread is nearly always one tick for full and mini.

In IB, does anyone know why the Nikkei cash index doesn't update from the Singapore exchange ($SGXNK)? I'd like to follow the cash prices during live hours, but the index quote in TWS is just a static price of the prior day's close.

Also, similar issue with the MSCI Taiwan Index. The futures are fine, but the cash index ($STW) doesn't have live or historical data (and isn't available anywhere else online). Anyone know how to get data for it?

I asked def about the HSI cash index once and was told that its just what IB can get from their interface with the exchange. My guess is the same applies with the others -- and in this case the symbols exist but IB isn't getting a feed from the service provider.
