I think about that sometimes, I'm not sure if its fair to include Alaska but they would have had double the real estate or the same if you include Canada which they mostly had. More of South America is usable I believe and the size of Russia (of which a lot is not usable).
The answer is too big, and I'm too lazy to go through it (even a tldr); the history of European expansion into the "new world".
