If you are using a mental stop and had an open position. What would you do:
1. If your software crashed in the middle of the trade?
2. Your computer took a dump?
3. The market crashed.
Way too many variables not to protect your account.
now that you averaged up to 22, sell 67 of the 1225 weekly puts at 6.75 and you will be looking good, buy the 1235 or 1240 call as protection and you are a champ
Well as I said I got a protective stop-loss in, just in case some of the things you mentioned happen. Besides that when 1 or 2 happens I'll call my broker...or use my iphone or my notebook. I mean seriously that's not a problem anymore.
If 3) happens I call my broker and try to get a hedge in a market. Like when the CME stops working and I'd try to open a position at the Eurex. Stops won't save you if that happens btw...well at least you might get some serious slippage.
If with 3) you meant that the market just moves down dramatically I've got my protection stop in.
My point was that unless something very unusal happens, I won't let them stop me out. Instead I'll get out manually when I think the trade doesn't work out. And this way at least on 90% of the losing trades I get out at a significant better price than getting stopped out...also I don't get stopped out if the market just touches a price and then reverses right away. How often does that happen to you? Think about it...
