Hyperthreading is sweet

I'm ready to retire my old Dell 2 ghz machine. I think it might be wise to build my own this time around. The only parts I'm going to try and salvage from my Dell are the Radeon 9500 Pro video card and the SB Audigy Gamer sound card. I think they still have some usable life in them. I will need to buy everything else.

I want to build a quiet PC. I have never built a PC before. Does anyone have suggestions with model numbers?

A little.... its gonna break the PCI bus bottleneck that currently exists.

But since our video cards go through AGP, and our memory
already has its own fast bus, this will not have much effect
for regular uses in terms for actual performance.

What sux is, there is a good chance all of our current video
cards will be incompatible with the new motherboards.
Wait and see....

If you are going to build your own or go white box, definitely go the quiet case route. You don't need to go crazy with liquid coolers and such but the low vol GPU fans, single fan quiet cases, and quiet power supplies all will contribute to your sanity.

I ran a big backtest on my old computer, and then ran TWO
of the same test again but in PARALELL.

Results:
Took 100% longer for twice the work


Results with hyperthreading on new machine:
Took 50% longer for twice the work.


It really does act like I have an extra processor on board :D
Guess ill be backtesting at 4X the speed now :D
