Rear Earth Metal dependency is an old myth. Research.

As for mfg coming or not coming back, it is dependant on the political will upstairs. Change the taxation structure, introduce sensible legal framework for environmental protection, and the robots will start humming anywhere in the US in no time. Anyone wondered why Chinese are in a rush to buy robots themselves? Cost of labor is a temporary factor in a long-term game. Germany can get by quite lovely with the expensive labor...
Much of Germany's car parts manufacturing is done in China as well. The robots are for assembly. I've been to Chinese manufacturing plants where all their sophisticated machinery is made in Germany.

Kuka, one of the biggest robot building companies in the world was German and was sold in 2016 to the Chinese.

Cannot, he's out in 3 months. Beside, bringing manufacturing back to America is pipe dream if you want to keep American cars in the 20 to 40k range. Parts are made in huge manufacturing plants in China's Northeast were labor is cheap. That's why global manufacturing moved there in the first place.

Not if we have other means to bring about the same productivity as over there. It's the productivity that counts. It's not a pipe dream. It's an eventuality if you want your sovereignty and independence.

But it's the Chinese who can't build their phones because they don't have their sovereignty and independence?
It goes both ways and in the end we all lose.

Ok so all of the machines that China uses to make all the car parts for German cars are all made in Germany?? And yet Germany itself didn't want to use these same machines to make car parts locally in Germany and instead decided to ship these machines ALL the way to China for China to make the car parts for them and incur higher cost of shipping to ship them back to Germany? That does NOT make sense. LOL

Major globalization fail. LOL

Yeah but who cares if the Chinese can't build their phones? It's our sovereignty and independence that is getting threatened because we are completely dependent on China for everything.

That or maybe you don't know enough about manufacturing to understand this.

Now you're not making sense. China will be manufacturing their own chips for the sake of their sovereignty and independence, and Intel will be losing tons of money because they will be left out of the phone chip market. Remember that US and European companies went to China because it was good for their bottom line and our stock markets. China didn't force anyone to go there!

If I read it correctly, the news is talking about the chip that Huawei designed and manufactured at Taiwan Semiconductor. The worst case scenario is that China got mad and bomb the facotory in Taiwan, then the whole world is short of chip supply for next few years. The key of the claims regarding the sovereignty and independence on both sides is who would take full control of Taiwan Semiconductor, or otherwise who will be the first one to destroy it.

Taiwan Semi makes chips (my mistake, not Intel in this particular case) under various Us agreements, so the fact remains that Trump is inciting China to build their own manufacturing facility to bypass US sanctions. Taiwan Semi is probably indemnified by the US government for the loss of business or might soon be suing for losses, although Taiwan is in a peculiar position vis a vis China and the US...
