House Democrats file suit to force Don McGahn to testify, saying his testimony needed for impeachment investigation

(CNN)The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday filed suit to compel former White House counsel Don McGahn's testimony, arguing that the committee needs to hear from him to determine whether it should consider articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

The lawsuit alleges that McGahn's testimony is essential to the committee's investigation, calling McGahn the "most important witness," and it outlines exactly how the Judiciary Committee might use McGahn's testimony in an impeachment proceeding.
"The Judiciary Committee is now determining whether to recommend articles of impeachment against the President based on the obstructive conduct described by the Special Counsel. But it cannot fulfill this most solemn constitutional responsibility without hearing testimony from a crucial witness to these events: former White House Counsel Donald F. McGahn II," the lawsuit says.

Pelosi rebuffs Nadler on impeachment after Mueller flop
The two senior Democrats discussed the party's next steps in a closed-door caucus meeting after the special counsel's testimony.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler pushed to launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump during a closed-door meeting Wednesday, only to be rebuffed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to four sources familiar with the discussions.

At a caucus meeting following the hotly anticipated testimony of special counsel Robert Mueller,Nadler suggested that several House committee chairs could begin drafting articles of impeachment against Trump. Pelosi called the idea premature, said the sources.

In the course of the wide-ranging discussion, Nadler countered Pelosi's pushback by noting that polls showed limited support for removing President Richard Nixon from office when the House began impeachment hearings in 1973, but that public support for the effort grew as more evidence came out about Nixon's illegal behavior.

As she has for months, Pelosi argued to her colleagues that the "slow, methodical approach" employed by House Democrats was the right way to move forward, despite the fact that more than 90 of her members have called for an impeachment inquiry to begin now.

U.S. House Judiciary chief call on Barr to recuse himself from Ukraine probes

WASHINGTON, Sept 25 (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General William Barr must recuse himself from any Ukraine-related investigations after a memo showed President Donald Trump in a July call told the Ukrainian president he would have the head of U.S. Justice Department contact him, the House Judiciary Committee chairman said.

"The President dragged the Attorney General into this mess. At a minimum, AG Barr must recuse himself until we get to the bottom of this matter," U.S. Representative Jerrold Nadler, the panel's Democratic chief, said on Twitter.

Trump Taxes: President Ordered to Turn Over Returns to Manhattan D.A.
A judge rejected the president’s argument that he was immune from criminal investigations.

A federal judge on Monday rejected a bold argument from President Trump that sitting presidents are immune from criminal investigations, allowing the Manhattan district attorney’s office to move forward with a subpoena seeking eight years of the president’s personal and corporate tax returns.

The ruling issued by Judge Victor Marrero of Manhattan federal court does not mean that the president’s tax returns will be turned over immediately. Mr. Trump’s lawyers quickly appealed the decision, and the appeals court agreed to temporarily block the order.
