How to turn off "Subscribe" to feature?

I've tried making sure the "Use 'Email Notification' by default?" option is marked "NO", but I continue to get emails to thread responses saying someone had just posted a new response. So I log in, select "unsubscribe" and leave, but more threads come through.

How do I turn off this annoying feature?

Is it the same thread? Are you making responses to the thread after you have shut off the ability to receive an update on it?

It's old threads - threads I haven't replied to in months and months. They pop back up and I get an email on them.

You can see all your threads here and unsubscribe to each one.

Wonder why those never showed up in the control panel under "subscribed threads" until you gave me that link?

It's there, see the picture attached, this is where you can change it to see the options.
