Really? Wow! That sounds strange. You sure? So nobody has the right to choose then in Canada? LOL This does not make sense. I mean even a company has the right to not hire the first person that walks through their door with all of the qualifications and references, and you would have no case if you go up to a judge and say "I have all of the qualifications and references and I was the first person interviewed but they denied me the employment" then why would a judge be forcing an individual to open up his/her home to the first person that walked through the door just because that person seems to have provided proof employment and references? It's not all about qualifications or proof of income and/or references, it's about the fit. Everybody has the right to decide what's best for them, what's best for their business, what's best for their own home.

Well that's why there is a lack of affordable housing everywhere. It's because people don't want to deal with this kind of BS and decent people end up not able to find an affordable place to rent and can only live in their cars in Walmart parking lots.

Here in Canada, in Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world the other side and their arguments are also heard and have a weight. You can't choose someone else who might be lesser qualified than someone whose pink hairs you don't like. Even if both are equally qualified you must stand ready to convince a judge why you decided against another individual when challenged. Makes perfect sense to most even-keeled people.

Income tax returns are a legitimate form of proof of income. Like I said, banks ask that all the time as proof of income when you apply for a mortgage or any loans so do banks have "poor judgement skills and lack of discernment too?" Are you, by any chance, that beautician who bragged about everything that she did but couldn't produce an income tax return to prove her income? LOL

The only crusader seems to be you here. There are laws against discrimination and those laws equally apply to tenancy agreements than to hiring. There are two needed to dance a tango. You make it out as if only one side has rights. But perhaps bullies get away with this shit in the cowboy town you live in. In most other places this shit does not jive.

You still have not explained to us how a 1 year old tax record aids you in assessing someone's ability to pay rent going forward. How is someone's proof of current employment not plenty enough to demonstrate that he/she is able to pay for rent? (in fact even proof of employment is completely unnecessary if that person can demonstrate to have sufficient funds in their account; if they stop paying rent then withhold the deposit and kick them out, that's how things go in the entire rest of the world). I mean, you could of course also require a DNA test to insure this person is indeed who he/she claims to be. In any civilized country there are limits to what is reasonable. Apparently not so south of the border...

I will be a judge to decide if both applicants are equally qualified or not and the criteria do not have anything to do with money. I know what I can discriminate against and what I cannot. Bottom line is I cannot discriminate against people according to something that they cannot change, eg. their race, skin color, ethnic background, age, gender, physical disability, sexual orientation (that's actually changeable), marital status, family status, creed, religious belief and etc. but things people CAN change like smoking, I can discriminate all I want and there is not a judge in the world that will rule against me. If I advertised that I don't want a smoker to rent my place and I do my due diligence to find out that you smoke, you are not getting my place even if you are as rich as Warren Buffet. Someone else who came after you demonstrated that they are not a smoker, they will get my place. You want to waste your time and money to go boohoo in front of a judge, go right ahead. Chances are, if I am able to own a property and am making money renting it out, I have more money than you and I would be able to afford better lawyers and you will lose. You don't like it? Quit smoking or go for a place that accepts smokers? Why don't you want to go rent a place that accepts smokers? You are discriminating against landlords that accept smokers as renters? LOL

It proves you have the ability to pay my rent as you claim to. True, you could very well be unemployed when applying to rent from me and I might not be able to know that until you fail to pay my rent then in that case, you get evicted.
