when I saw an old ice cream van for sale, something clicked.

Selling ice cream was an ideal business for a beginner like me: I could start it without much capital, I didn't need any staff and it was something I had a bit of experience of, thanks to my days as a beach bum in Jersey.

There was one problem; I was too tall for the inside of the van. The only way I could stand upright was if I didn't wear any shoes, so I drove around in my socks.

I didn't have contacts to get my business off the ground, but I had the Yellow Pages, so I looked under the heading Ice cream suppliers, and phoned around until I found the company that offered the best deal - simple, huh?

Then I bought enough ice cream for the weekend to see how it went, but I soon worked out what sold, and got the van properly stocked. I started selling cigarettes, soft drinks, confectionery and milk.

Soon some of my stock was returning an 80 per cent profit, and my added goods made the van a yearround operation. I bought another van and got a driver to work it for me on commission. Soon I had a fleet of five or six, and Duncan's Super Ices was born.

As ever, how you execute is more important in creating a sucessful business and getting rich. You dont need a great new idea.

How does this apply to trading? Well there are countless systems out there, already invented, and described in books. Any of these can make you rich. All you have to do is find one that fits you and execute it with discipline over several years. Then you can make millions too..
