The progressive tense and relax routine outlined above always worked for me. What happens is that your thoughts are causing muscle tensions and the muscle tensions are generating thoughts. You break the cycle by just tensing and relaxing the muscles. Maybe that is why an evening workout helps many to sleep. After years of the tense and relax thing I can just think about tensing and relaxing my toes and my whole body relax!es! I lifted weights and did some butterflys on the machine last night and I don't recall anything after hitting the pillow much, next thing I knew it was daybreak and the puppy was lobbying for some dogfood.
Taking some melatonin will probably do it for you too.
People scoff at my magnetic pad I have between the mattress and box springs but it makes a big, big difference. It replicates the magnetic field of the earth of 4000 years ago. The only noted health benefit from those pads is some documented evidence that calcium deposits are reduced after about a year of use but basically my wife and I both felt the difference from day [night actually] one. It makes me feel like I slept 11 hours when I only did 7..
