How to check out broker?

Which are the best ways to check out my local brokers to insure account protection, I understand that ISPC protects for failure but not if your broker decides to perform illegal nasties.

Any good links, I thought the BBB would have some but very few.
 
Has allot of interesting links .. One was a killer arbitration can cost up to 5100.00 bucks a pop. Doesn't really say how to check a broker out though. I remember in an area a few years back one cleaned people out of millions in the Cleveland area. They never did recover all the funds and many lost caused insurance called it fraud so it was like zipping your money up in a Ziploc and throwing it in the ocean.
