How to build a secure computer for storing digital crypto assets

You pushed the idea of Kleimann as Satoshi backed with 0 technical reasoning, it was ridiculous

Yet, you claim to be some hotshot software engineer but do not exhibit any engineering thought processes, your claim sounds highly doubtful, but whateverz, dude, anyone can claim anything on ET

You're still stuck on your fiat job, but had you invested a paltry sum in bitcoin or eth 7 years ago, you'd be retired by now instead of working on your "hated profession" (your words) and you'd be on the side of Bitcoiners

I hit a nerve there :D

Take it easy, these pseudo arguments over internet are not worthy of a headache. But if you want to continue throwing liver bile I am sure that you can use something better than "have fun staying poor at your job".

You crypto boys are facing hard times, repeating the same arguments over and over for years are not interesting anymore. They were fun at some point but now they are rancid, specially when most of you are leaving the boat of the "new future". Still waiting for the great reset?

It's baffling that someone who claims to be a "software engineer" is so gullible to accept words and hearsays as proofs when there is absolute mathematical proof from software engineering (i.e private keys signature proofs)

Anyone who claims or suspected to be Satoshi can simply transfer bitcoins using a few of the 20,000+ private keys and until that happens... don't believe anything or anyone, not even the lawyers or courts or judges

pseudo arguments? Being a toxic maximalist is my "job", lol. I don't get paid to do it... and usually less active during bear markets (mood is down), but I still try to contribute to the efforts as much as I can

We crypto bros are more annoying during the bull market, so wait till next year :D

Have fun staying poor

I'd argue the great reset is already happening, but that's a pseudo argument rabbit hole that gets tiring and have no absolutes, no thanks :D

High level of crimes, homeless encampments in the major cities, stores closing down, chaos is prevalent, high inflation causing hardships and poverty , smash and grab every day, society is breaking apart I used to be able to walk late at night at these places

Rather than argue, I moved my family out of that environment

Have fun in the great reset :D

You need someone that cares about it to argue with. Maybe a teenager would enter the argument, I read your post and I don't know what to say, to be honest.

It sounds that you don't have any education, that would explain the constant reference to my title. Graduates don't care about my achievements, they have theirs to worry about.

That makes sense looking at the stupid list you started this thread with. It all checks out.

It also checks out that the less qualified in computer science are the best acolytes in the crypto space.

BWAHAHAAHAHAHA, it seems I hit a nerve there Mr Msc still working a slave-fiat-cuck-wage job, lol

Very sad story loss of 25 bitcoins...

A couple of items on what likely was the cause

1. Windows (keylogger, not possible on a clean Linux install)
2. Password manager (online) and possible passphrase 12-words (the root private key seed phrase stored somewhere online = BIG, HUGE NO-NO)

My guide involves Bitcoin-core full node wallet for bitcoins (no seed phrase, hardcore private keys on a local file) and for other crypto digital assets, Metamask 12 words not stored online

All private keys for all crypto digital assets are all locally stored, always

Backup and recovery for peace of mind that covers location risk-mitigation

I cannot recommend a hardware wallet since I've never owned or used one

[There have been some hacks and the whole customer database with names, addresses and phone numbers resulting in extortion and threats plus the latest controversy seems to indicate an ability to reconstruct private keys via internet connection iow, not hot wallets]

We'll discuss how to to build a secure computer "from scratch"

Requirements:

1. A linux-friendly CPU dedicated computer with 8GB RAM and at least 1 TB SSD
2. A paid (good review) VPN service. Optional but highly-recommended, but no free VPN

You can recycle an old computer, desktop or laptop, or you can ask one of your relatives or friends, usually those people are ready to dispose of old computers

or just buy one on eBay, I see a Lenovo T470s core-i5 6300u 8gb ram listed for less than US $200 refurbished, just need to upgrade the SSD to 1 TB

---------

Perhaps you're thinking you don't need a secure computer because the current value of your investments are less than $10k... This is true now, but you have to plan for the future in case it catches on

Personal anecdote.. I've kept more than 20 btc's on a web wallet blockchain dot info (before it became dot com) and 10 btc's on a bitcoin phone wallet (not electrum but an open source version SPV wallet). Not recommended at all now, but at the time I did, the price of bitcoin was less than $500/btc

You can google it there was a hack on blockchain dot info during the 2017 bull market and people lost millions of $ worth of bitcoins. Many suspected it was an inside job, employee, but who knows. Those losses are worth more now

Some of the victims were on r/bitcoin and let's face it, toxic posters are telling them how stupid they were for storing bitcoins worth millions of $ on a web wallet and most if not all of them gave the same excuse, they've had those bitcoins there since they were only worth very little

Maybe you only think that your 0.1 btc or 0.5 btc or even 1 btc is not worth all the troubles... Perhaps today, but in 5-20 years, when 1 bitcoins is worth $1M-$10M each, they will be

-------

We'll divide into sections. If you run into problems, Reply to the section here I'll try to help and I'm sure others may offer help, too. There's many resources too on YouTube or simple google

1. Setting up the linux OS , and the VPN software
VPN is connected to US or whatever your local country
2. Setup a new google email account. Secure this google account with a 2FA
2a. Install google chrome or google chrome beta and login with the account above
From this time forward, you will set your VPN connection to South Korea
3. Install the Bitcoin core software full node
4. Install the Metamask web extension wallet
5 Setup passwords for the Bitcoin software and Metamask wallets
6. Encrypted backups and recovery

6. Encrypted backups and recovery

If you've completed all the steps (sections), congratulations! It was not as hard as it looked. May have been time consuming especially the Bitcoin blockchain download, but not difficult

The last section is the most difficult and complex... for security reasons

There is no bitcoins or crypto assets, yet. I've never mentioned to transfer any to any of the wallets, for good reason

Now is the time to test the waters

Generate 110 receiving addresses on the bitcoin core (it's under help menu, here's a button called receive, and there's a button create new address button, segwit addresses)

Let's review, on a previous section you did encrypt the wallet with a strong password that you saved to your new fake google email? Good (It's under settings "encrypt wallet")

When you back up the "walletFileName.dat", it comes with 100 bitcoin addresses and private keys, if you generate 110 addresses, it will generate not 10, but another 100, so if you ever use more than 100 addresses, this back up will cover you for up to 200 addresses, when you exceed that you have to update your backup

Send $100 worth of btc to any of the addresses on the bitcoin core wallet, Once confirmed, you can use bitcoin core to send to another address in the bitcoin core list of addresses, it will ask for a password, use your password, if it doesn't work, you contributed $100 worth of btc to everyone. You did not save your password correctly

If it worked, shutdown bitcoin core and you are now ready to move the walletFilename.dat to an encrypted volume container

---------

On Metamask, generate 5 addresses "drop down arrow add account "and send $100 worth of Eth.to the third address

Wipe out Metamask (reset) by un-installing the google web extension, but make sure you have written down the 12 words, if you need to check, you can go to settings and security and privacy, reveal secret recovery phrase

Install Metamask web extension and use the 12 words and generate 5 addresses if you see your Eth on the 3rd address, you are ready to back up the 12 words to the encrypted volume container

--------

https://www.digitalocean.com/commun...o-create-an-encrypted-volume-on-an-ubuntu-vps

You will move your walletFileName.dat to the encrypted volume, create a text file on the volume with the 12 word passphrase

uninstall Metamask

shutdown the computer. After 5 days, restore your bitcoin-core wallet by copying from the encrypted volume and also restore Metamask from the text file on the encrypted volume

If successful, you can start to load up the bitcoin core with more bitcoins and the Metamask with more digital assets,

make copies of the encypted volume and send to offsite, share the process with a loved one

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. Yes, this last part is difficult. Yes, there are things I did not say since I will only get questions if someone actually made it this far

Very sad story loss of 25 bitcoins...
As others have pointed out, seed phrases didn't exit in 2012.

He also seems to understand that the password manager only had 30 bits of entropy.

But how would anyone know to try and hack a random password manager in the hopes that there was a seed phrase in there??? I'm not saying he is lying, but the story doesn't add up.
