How much time do you spend monitoring your trading systems everyday

Hello to everybody.

I would like to build trading systems that I can monitor during the day even if I have a daily job. I am wondering if other traders do the same with a daily job. I was thinking that I could run the software on a VPS and monitor whether the systems were live or not.

Does anybody do a similar thing? Is it possible to trade and have a normal job until I have enough money to trade as the main occupation?

I can only speak from my decades of experience, but her is my stab at it.

1 - I have found that longer term vertical spreads or risk reversals are great at major turning points. Going out 4-6 months (no longer as the options dont move much) seems perfect for ME.
I only do this at major turning points like all time highs when the market seems to have stalled, or after big declines and the first signs of a bounce.

2 - Long collar positions where I open stock an by a protective put spread very wide) and sell a call going out 14-30 days in time.

3 - Keep in mind your own tolerances for risk. I can be a nervous trader when the market is going against me, so make sure you can always handle the "what if the market goes against me mind frame, not the How much can I make" attitude.

Yes, sure, no problem; it is possible to monitor your account and your trading system; ie. practically any internet system, as long as it offers an interface.
Everything is possible as long as it has a TCP/IP connection (ie. internet connection) to the destination and you have the API (ie. the interface specification) and the credentials (username/AcctId, password etc.) to the entity you want to monitor.
Of course you would need to write a program that does all the things you want to do, or let it develop by an experienced programmer.

90% of my signaling / transactions fall on definitive dates throughout the year. Depending on the model's heuristics, these can be (1st trading day nearest to) Jan 2, Feb 1st, May 1st, 2nd Monday of July, Oct 1st, and Nov 1st. The rest (10% of signals ) fall on Mondays depending on weekly indicator outputs.

I know that is possible to monitor a system. I am wondering who does have a job and also trades successfully.

It would be painful not to be able to trade if you can't follow your intraday strategies while you're at work.

In my opinion, the short basic answer is no -- I don't see how a person with a full time job can expect to trade on the side and be successful at it.
Trading is not something you can kind of just brush off to the side. :confused:

But what kind of strategy are you planning on implementing...this is also a big factor in determining how feasible it is to 'trade on the side' o_O

To be honest I know many system traders that run their strategies from a VPS. I assume that before they became full-time traders, they could do the same thing when employed.

Regarding the strategies, nothing surprising. I am planning to design trend followers, mean reversion, volatility etc.

Trading is part art, part science. I don't see how 'system' traders do it. :confused::) But that's besides the point, if they can make it work...good for them.

What timeframe are these trades? what kind of results/percentages are you expecting? etc
