17 screens.

I trade only 5 stocks. 1 main screen has all 5 stocks side-by-side so I can trade relative strength between them. 5 monitors, 1 dedicated to each stock: displays the same stock on different time-frames (e.g. 30-min, 5-min, 1-min, 288 tick, 42 tick, etc.).
1 screen for the ES futures and the market internals (e.g. $TRIN, $TICK, different indices, etc..
My laptop is for order entries and web lookup.
Those 7 screens are what I look at constantly during the trading sessions.
The other screens are either on different stocks or the same 5 stocks using a different charting software. This will give me a sense of the market more or less.
3 desktops, 2 laptops.

I used two computers for a while with 3 screens, just not necessary anymore. Unless you are running Bloomberg or something, uses up a ton of bandwidth and RAM for some reason, not worth the hassle, even though I had the two networked. I find 1 computer and three 19" screens to be fine and not too distracting. Order routing takes up a tiny amount of bandwidth.
1. Execution screens, positions, p&l
2. Charts
3. News, e-mail, internet, AIM
19" Dell screens you can get refurbished, good as new, for $119 on Dell Outlet. Here is the link:

I have no doubt there is a "sitting in the space shuttle" appeal to multi-monitors (three or more) that we just love and have no interest in giving-up, even if we didn't need them.Quote from Tide31:
WOW. It must be like sitting in the space shuttle. I thought heated pool was a utility expense. I hope you are a K-1 somewhere so you can write off part of your electric bill.

FWIW, I stated my reasons for needing at least three monitors, and it's nice that there is at least some agreement amongst the other traders who are posting.
this make me LOL seriouslyQuote from mizhael:
So how many monitors do you stare at while doing daytrading?
I am considering 2 at this stage (I already have got one), and want to be able to expand to 4 later...
honestly...you just need one monitor to trade successfully...why need more than 1?
