The " free for all ", " dog eat dog " system is the product of America's history. A lot of the pionneers were running from justice etc. in Europe and what a haven they found. Lax laws and a grab it for yourself society.
The Mafia flourished and outlaws were heroes - so who can possibly be surprised at the end result. The religious cults only policed their own areas and generally made things worse by being narrow minded.
Driven by greed and fear where people like Enron bosses make billions Are they just the tip of the iceberg ?? Vice is rewarded big time and honesty which gets in the way is kicked into oblivion.
Have a succesful, profitable and happy society imho and not ruin honest enterprise by crime
