Okay, I still need to know one more thing. What happens if the republicans take over a chamber of congress in a mid-term election?
Have fun on the trail.
Yeah, this wager is tempting. At first, I thought he meant the next two presidential elections, which would theoretically require Obama to win, then Biden (!). That's a fair bit less than an even possibility. The democrats have only had one two termer in modern times, and Algore was a better candidate than Biden'd be, and he couldn't pull it off.
A lot of American voters are not going to give up on their reliance of government no matter how bad things get. If The One gets to implement a lot of his socialistic agenda and the economy shows the inevitable results of that before the next presidential election, I am unconvinced that a majority of voters would suddenly go "gee, socialism sucks, let's go back to hard work and self reliance." A lot of voters could be convinced that the reason all the socialism that would have come to pass in this scenario and didn't work was because there wasn't enough of it, and the secret to prosperity is even more bailouts, even higher taxes, even more government, even more takeovers and even more federal debt.
Of course, the republicans have tossed aside conservationism as well, preferring to offer some sort of Free (from reality) Socialism Lite - some free goodies from Uncle Sam plus tax cuts.
Until voters realize that TANSTAAFL, both parties are going to be doing their best to drive this country off a cliff.
