This kind of crap, along with the stolen election, the grassy knoll, the explosives planted to bring down the twin towers, etc., etc. will always be with us. God help us. But at least in the case of Covid we have both the science and the statistics. We had neither in December of 2019.
The authors mention that the proper approach would have been to protect the most vulnerable and let the others take their chances. Indeed, and this is precisely what we did once vaccines were available up until the availability was sufficient to cover everyone.
In December of 2019, however, there were no Covid vaccines! The only way to fight the virus was either universal,
proper mask wearing*, or avoiding contact. In the U.S., universal,
proper mask wearing is culturally, legally and politically impossible. In any case, there were not nearly enough masks available, so we made them from tee shirts following You Tube instructions. The only way to avoid infection of the vulnerable in the U.S. was to close down.
The big mistake was made by the Trump administrations prior to December 2019 when they disbanded the office set up by the Obama administration to deal specifically with pandemic threats. This error was compounded by Trump's lies, which held back preparation for the Covid onslaught by months.
When the American public elected an obvious Jackass and liar to the presidency, they did not foresee that they would soon be beset by virus that would eventually take more than a million of their lives. Had they, they might have recognized the importance of competence in the oval office and rejected Trump for a more competent candidate.
*This is proven by the experience of Taiwan and Japan, Two countries with high population densities, entirely unvaccinated, both geographically close and tied to the epicenter of infection through commerce. Both Japan's and Taiwan's defense against Covid consisted of virtually universal compliance with proper mask wearing. It was amazingly successful!
