How does the market close work?

So I know the market closes at 1pm PT 4PM ET
but then for whatever reason I can still see trading going on until 1:15pm PT or 4:15pm ET.

Also if I enter limit buy or sell orders, the orders go through after 1pm/4pm.
 
I assume it depends on the broker.

SPY and QQQ options trade until 4:15pm EST - but BMO Investorline will cancel my unfilled option orders at 4:00 pm EST.

Some brokers allow After-hours-trading, some don't.

If they do, usually, you can specify, in your order, whether the order cancels itself at the normal market closing time; or whether it will stay active past normal closing. Check with your broker.
