Your clever role as a surf groupie effectively keeps you out of any herds
Two bulls, young and old, stand on a hill and look down at the herd of cows.
The young bull says: "Look, you see this redhead, with white spots? Come on quickly go down and сover her! The old bull (thick bass): " No-o-o ..."
The young bull again: "And this black thing that looks at us? Come on, quick, quick. go down and lets cover her?"
The old bull (with the same thick bass): " No-o-o ...... Now we will slowly descend from the mountain and f@ck all herd...! "

honestly speaking, there are many ways to skin the cat.
also the definition of go with the herd, go in front of the herd, go behind the herd, go against the herd .... is not defined.
different people interpret it differently ended up whatever we say are valid.
Getting in ahead of the herd isn't the only way to make money. It depends on the herd. If you're long in an uptrend and short in a downtrend, you're certainly not ahead of anyone, but you will make money. And it will be with manageable risk, which is vitally important.
Do the opposite of what the herd is doing. For example I just made tomorrow's lunch money in the Nikkei by selling to some from the herd who came to buy. Only lunch money, you say? Yes, but I'm going to have bear paw soup at $1000 a dish. I always order the left paw as that's the one the bear licks. He uses his right paw to scratch his butt. Or is it the other way around? Oh well, I'm sure they wash it first!!
On the T&S, filtering for different contract sizes will show the activity of different market players. Each group operate differently at various price levels and price action activity. From observation, there are different size groups that operate with different goals in mind. Each group could be considered a herd. Scalpers perceives price action differently than traverse traders, trend followers or investors. Each will have a different display to organize market data and each will have different timeframes to achieve those goals.
It's useful to see which price levels the large contract sizes trade at. They map where the most likely levels when touched/penetrated/XO/rejected, the pace of market orders accelerates which indicate changes in sentiment. (intraday).
