You need to explain 2 things:

1) In capitalist economies there are good times as well as bad
2) In the good times, IGNORE what everyone else is doing and save as much as you can

I would tell them the truth instead of filling them with partisan political bullshit.

If they were a bit older I would make them do a simple math problem.
Growth in GDP 4%(+/-) and the growth in debt 7% (+/-) since the early 1980's.

(1*1.04)^29 less (1*1.07)^29 leaves a growing "debt load" that at some point is impossible to service.
