How do you distinguish between the belief in God and the occult?

Quote from Epic:

...The most recent surveys indicate that only 3% of Americans claimed to be convinced that God doesn't exist, compared to 73% who were convinced that God does exist. Another 14% strongly believed but had slight doubt. Another 9% were in the "not really sure" category...
Were these surveys conducted in church?

...It is a very difficult thing to remain atheist...
Far from it. Accepting reality is more unfettered and liberating than bearing the ongoing weight of an imaginary construct that wobbles whenever it bumps into that reality.

Gallup

It's always intriguing to me how much atheists want to believe that they belong to a much larger group in this country.

Quote from Free Thinker:

Atheism is not a conscious act of turning away from all gods. It is simply the final destination ...

Somehow I think you are going to be disappointed with that final destination you have set up for yourself.

Hey , but we all get a mixture of what we need and deserve in this life.

Quote from Epic:

Actual atheists end up in a very small minority, and a disproportionate number of them end up taking an activist role, just like extreme minority groups in any situation. At that point they are no longer atheist, but anti-theist.

It really does shape your entire existence whether you choose to recognize it or not.

stu is a prime example of that: anytime "god" is mentioned here on ET his "god search bots" alert him so he can post asap.

Oh, so now you know god's will? Would that qualify as sacrilege or blasphemy? Please advise.

I think that the tough thing for atheists to express is the difference between belief in religion and belief in God. If Christianity as we know it today is wrong, does that mean that god doesn't exist? No. It simply means that God as defined in the "Holy Trinity" doctrine does not exist.

The vast majority of people believe in God, even if they don't subscribe to a particular faith. The overall human need for a higher power or creator is undeniable across the globe.
