How do you choose what to trade

I am interested in the views of long term position traders. How do you choose what securities to trade?

I choose securities that back test best over a long period of time, say 20 years. I wonder what your ideas are.
 
I am using the same method because it is very logical....it makes sense to trade only those instruments which have shown to consistently exhibit price patterns that your system targets...the same logic would apply if someone used a wholly fundamentals-driven trading system...
