How do people fail at this?

Why not start a Journal where you are honest about your failings and asking for assistance.
You need to start it off giving a good description of what and how you currently trade.
There are plenty of very helpful posters on ET toward those with a good honest attitude.
Asking right question ensures there will be useful answer. The problem is that to get understanding what you don't know is one of the most difficult issues that hinders trading progress.

Those are the words that define the market, you have to be discipline and focused, especially when making big decisions.
Just that sometimes we can't control our emotions and this affect us in the market severely.

I've said this time and time and time again. The best way to learn is by not asking direct questions.

You'll learn far more by finding out the answer yourself rather than being told the answer straight away.

Why?...Because you'll cover soooo much more ground, and that really matters.

Imo, the more you learn about trading the less emotions, that is unless the person is just a crazy emotional person full stop.
Maybe its an aging thing as well, older people seem to be able to control this area better?

I agree, all you need is a little push or direction if you are going off track.

Good saying, Always expect and earn less in starting career of trading, that way you will learn that how to manage risk.
This also depends on the amount you started with, you should be careful to start with an amount you can afford to lose.

This is true, but some folks by nature are emotional unstable and in fact I would encourage those in this condition not to trade at all. Because the market can definitely raise emotions.

Well there are enough means to control or eliminate emotions from trading, for example using automated strategies. I'm very emotional person but still like to code and use robots which allows to me to check trading stats not often than weekly.

A robot self taught (so-called machine learning) is emotion free.

A human hasn't been birthed (excluding those in vegetative state of course) that can do any worthwhile task emotion free.
