Fukushima nuclear water to be released via undersea tunnel

TOKYO (AP) — The operator of the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant said Wednesday it plans to build an undersea tunnel so that massive amounts of treated but still radioactive water can be released into the ocean about 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) away from the plant to avoid interference with local fishing.

The operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, said it hopes to start releasing the water in spring 2023. TEPCO says hundreds of storage tanks at the plant need to be removed to make room for facilities necessary for the plant’s decommissioning.

All water is radioactive!!!! You've heard of Tritium, no doubt. Its a naturally occurring isotope of Hydrogen. I's a beta emitter (electrons). Normal drinking water counts will be in the picocuries per liter. If all of the nuclear waste produced so far by man (the majority of it is military related) was dumped into the ocean with uniform mixing, the level of radioactivity in the ocean would remain below that permitted in drinking water.

The Fukushima water will have been ion exchanged before releasing to the ocean leaving only low levels of radioactivity. Once mixed with ocean water it will be harmless.

Let us not forget that the Media's job is first to sell advertising. To that end media must grab our attention. Responsible media tries to do that without actually lying. But most media sources have no problem with misleading us so long as they are not outright lying. That's why those media sources that don't intentionally craft misleading headlines, NYT, WAPO, PBS, and a few others, remain critically important components of a free society in an ocean of intentionally misleading headlines and deliberate misinformation.
