Chicago's public school system sucks but the private school system is enormously much better and extremely expensive.
The top 10 private schools in Chicago typically put 3 of their private schools in the top 50 nationwide...tuition for any of these private schools > 30k per year but they do produce student scores for entry into college: SATs > 1400 and ACTs > 32.
- SSAT entry scores into these private high schools > 700.
It's a very competitive academic environment in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. The amount of money you have and where you live will dictate the academic proficiency of your child and what university they eventually attend.
It's the same anywhere else in the United States.
- Just as importantly, the private school system in Chicago is diverse with people of color but it's a huge economic difference to the people of color in the public school system.

In contrast, I'm saying genes are important but today the most important reasons that determine a child's academic success is their parents' socioeconomic status.
Simply, I never implied that genetics was not important. I've stated there are other reasons more important, especially in Chicago.
By the way, when a public school identifies an exceptional student at a young age...they usually encourage the parents of that student to enroll their child into a private school with better academic resources...
- This process is very common in the Chicago area and it dilutes the academic achievements in the public school system when they lose their brightest students to the private school system by offering free tuition and subsidized transportation to those of less socioeconomic status to be able to attend the top private schools...some even attend top prep boarding schools out of state.
There have been studies too. They show that if you give children from poor neighborhoods (low SES) access to the same resources as the private school system (high SES)...those children do in fact excel academically on the same level (academic grades, SATs, ACTs) and are accepted/attend the top universities in North America.

It’s a good question.
An adult reading level is between a seventh and eighth grade reading level - and there is nothing wrong with that.
Having an eight grade reading level does not mean you are using phonics to sound out words but rather you are actually able to understand and digest what you’re reading. Most of the media we consume is purposely written at an eighth grade level like your local news paper or your favorite magazine. The New York Times and Wall Street Journal are good examples of media written at a between tenth and eleventh grade level, or even higher depending on subject matter like science and economics.
States use different ways of measuring reading level. An accepted measure is the Lexile score. Some examples of score and grade level, and corresponding examples are as follows:
You can see there is a pretty substantial difference between the Hobbit and challenging book like Pride and Prejudice.
The point I was making was that these proficiency exams don’t really mean much in the real world, and tying them to graduation rates is misleading.
