I would suggest placing a "report spam" button at the top of every thread. Once the thread is reported by an arbitrary number of ET members (say 10). Then the thread is suspended until further review by moderators.

This way everyone can do their part.

That's what Craigslist does.

I'm just trying to reduce the # of "New Thread" e-mails I get and unfortunately, that would do nothing to alleviate those. This is particularly true when one person starts a spam thread in every forum that I subscribe to.

... If you're a dedicated spammer -- that is, you (aim to) make a living through online streams of revenue, whether above board or not -- you'd readily adapt to having to post (say, in Chit Chat) a few times to establish quasi-legitimacy for your handle; dealing with a waiting period or probation; forging / anonymizing your IP; etc.

But I submit that you'd have a very hard time adapting to the swift sweet justice of the invisible armed posse that never sleeps...
chit chat & poli reli etc should in NO WAY serve to establish "quasi-legitimacy" of a handle...

probation period: spammers' time is money, they focus on least-resistance-path, max-impact type techniques /sites... agree that an always-on posse of anti-spam warriors is a good complimentary measure though!

anonymizer type spamming: there are tools, e.g. http://forums.b2evolution.net/viewforum.php?f=37
... just ban the incriminated domains and inform the domain owners... its for them to take appropriate measures, and if they don't, then no regret in having banned them...
