BUT NO WAY IN HELL ARE YOU GONA LIVE AN OK LIFE on 40K in Manhattan.........sorry I call bullshit on that. Well, maby if you live outside in a cardbord box by CROBAR........40k might do it.

If you are from Manhattan and you cannot live on 40k a month, you need to learn some serious money management.
I have never paid over 1k a month rent for my 4 years living in NYC. I've lived with 3 different roommates and now have my own place for 1k a month. You gotta have contacts and know how to negotiate fair deals. No it's not rent controlled, I only wish I got the rent controlled place I aimed for a while back.
I can keep my food costs extremely low, about 300 a month. Bills, CCs, student loands are variable person to person but those were my big expenses. And you gotta find the right places to party and how to conserve cash. Get to know bartenders, look for free parties, sneak those tiny liquor bottles inside the place, etc.
40k a year in Manhattan is very possible to live on and have a bunch of fun. I've done it, all with my crazy bills and debts.
If you know how to work your taxes, you will actually keep a very good majority of that money. Look, how do you think all the actors, musicians and artists do it? They make like 20k a year.
You know what the average income is in East Village? 16k a year. Lower East Side is like 10k a year.
Shit man, I've had to manage it for like 8 months on unemployment. So do not even try to tell me that 40k is not enough in Manhattan for a single person.
