Frankly, I wish some attorney who is familiar with labor law would give us a definitive answer on this. I owned my own business for 30 years and I would have been afraid to let someone work for free....for fear that they might get mad about something or get hurt, then report you later or file suit for non-payment. Of course, you can volunteer for club, charity, civic work but I doubt you can legally do so for a private business unless possibly with a lot of red tape, legal disclaimers, insurance, etc. What about such things as social security, work comp., unemployment ins., and other pesky details?
