Jimmy Carter says Clinton as VP would be the "worst mistake" Obama could make

THE GUARDIAN, June 05, 2008

BARACK Obama, the Democratic Party nominee for the White House race, would make the "worst mistake" if he chose Hillary Clinton as running mate, former US president Jimmy Carter said today.

Naming the New York senator as his vice-presidential nominee "would be the worst mistake that could be made", Mr Carter told The Guardian. "That would just accumulate the negative aspects of both candidates."

Mr Carter, Democrat president from 1977 to 1981, said he would also have been against Senator Obama being vice-presidential nominee had Senator Clinton been victorious in the marathon round of primaries for the presidential nomination.

"If you take that 50 per cent who just don't want to vote for Clinton and add it to whatever element there might be who don't think Obama is white enough or old enough or experienced enough or because he's got a middle name that sounds Arab, you could have the worst of both worlds," he said.

Mr Carter said he favoured "a person who can compensate for (Obama's) obvious potential defects, his youthfulness and his lack of long experience in military and international affairs".

He said he favoured the former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sam Nunn.

"That would be my preference but there are other senior Democrats who would have similar credentials to Sam Nunn," he said.
