Highly Recommended Q6600 based custom build

I probably know more about POWER SUPPLIES than most people in this Forum. And yes, while they are not the most glamorous component on a computer, they are without a doubt VERY important!

That having been said, I think that you are sadly mistaken about the performance of Dell power supplies in general, and this is coming from someone that has a PC Power & Cooling "Silencer 410" in their Dell Dimension 8300 for the past 5 years. ( 5 year warranty ).

Oh . . .and as for the 525 watt piece of "junk" that comes with my Dell T3400 . . . it has the same three +12V rated rails ( at 18 amps ) as the Corsair 620 watt unit that you have highlighted.

Again, if you think that you actually need a 620 watt power supply ( $189.99 ) with a +3.3V rail at 24 amps and a +5v rail at 30 amps for a TRADING computer, then you really need a reality check.

A PC Power & Cooling "Silencer-470" would be more than sufficient with a single +12v rail at 26 amps and a +5v rail at 32 amps and a +3.3v rail at 28 amps . . . all for just $75.00

Overkill is overkill.

:)

This is almost 5 years old thread when I build my computer.

Same person Landis82 at that time was known under name waggie945 was telling me to spend $143 on a power supply.
I paid $23 for it with a case. That computer was running flawless for 4.5 years 24 hours a day nonstop and I have donated it to my kid's school this January. Only thing that failed was an integrated NIC card about 2 years ago.

Based on my own experience power supply is not a "MAJOR" component in system stability.

This system was build 5 years ago:

Asus P4P800 deluxe
2.4 pentium 800FSB
512 ram DDR3200

another 512 of ram was added shortly after system was build

$23 paid for case with 350W power supply on a local show

This one was build a year ago:

ASUS P5W DH DELUXE/WIFI-AP LGA 775 Intel 975X ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80557E6600 - Retail

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400C4 - Retail

Both systems running Windows XP Pro.

I did no see any difference in performance. (for day trading).

Anything more expensive than mid range DELL is overkill.

OK, a retail version can be switched. Got it.

I think personally it would be better to go with OEM version for lower price and keep the OS in a SPARE box or even to give to a school etc later on. Price of the OEM version of Vista business was a mere $135, shipping included. FWIW

Price jumped up about 4 dollars...........UPS is passing on the shipping costs ........no such thing as FREE SHIPPING .. Correction: that was the 64 bit version...........32 is what regular folks want, NOT 64 price is still $135,00 my mistake

Most OEM box makers paid about $45 for XP Home.. and that was usually marked up to about $90 to the retail customer.

Corsiar HX620 is $115 shipped.

I challenge you to find a modular Seasonic PS of this quality/capacity for such a price.

Many argue it is best to run a PS @ ~50% of it's capacity. An overclocked Q6600@3.2 draws 150-160W just on it's own. Add all system fans, multiple HD's, dual v.cards, mobo and anticipation of future integration/longevity, 620W is not complete overkill. Those 850W Antec Trio's and 1000W OCZ ones, definitely are IMO.

Again, I would tend to agree.

That certainly is an amazing price!
New Egg has the Corsair HX620 for $169.00 and that includes a $20 rebate.

For sure. If anyone is in need of a new PS, highly recommend this purchase from buy.com. You'll pay at least $80-90 for a decent one, spend the extra $25 to get the best. You'll also like the modular capability where you can choose how many power cables will run from the PS to components, thus reducing clutter and increasing airflow.
