Going straight to the nuclear option was the right thing to do. If the bank had confronted him he'd have denied it. Then they'd have had an employee with access to all their systems plus a grudge. Who wants that?
 
Be careful about mental gymnastics I guess. Entirely possible the guy thought he made up for the cost of the sandwich by the value contributed to the company (and he may well have been right on that point).
 
Welcome to at WILL employment.....in defense of the corporation, it could be construed as a character flaw the could migrate to task assignments. It could be presumed that there were several occurrences and the associate was informed by other staff members of the issue. Rule of thumb if it is the refuse container it is fair game.

Nice front. They wanted to get rid of him and it was a good enough reason. He was the "head of high-yield bond trading for Europe, the Middle East and Africa". You think a position like that would be vacated for some sandwiches, get real.

Depends on company culture. The interpretations already posted in this thread are good examples of how a certain situation can be interpreted in different ways.
