No I attempt to stay current on world affairs just like you do, apparently. By reading the newspaper and watching the news.....
It's just that I'm smart enough to know that this information doesn't mean that I REALLY know how it is any place other than where I personally experience it on a daily basis.......
Point taken. However, perhaps your personal experience is not entirely representative of what is going on in your country in the aggregate, or at least in key "hot spot" areas around the country. Areas that do not appear to be getting smaller. Therefore, by your own admission, perhaps you are no better informed than I about those areas of your country with which you are not personally familiar. Consequently, your opinion carries no more weight than mine, and perhaps less so, because mine at least is aligned with what is reported by the mainstream media across the globe.Quote from Haroki:

Then again, maybe not. For the part I didn't say is that I know 2 guys that grew up in the rough areas of LA. Gang banger neighorhood. And while they've both said it was bad enough to motivate them to get out, it's nowhere as bad as the media represents.
And so, by YOUR own admission, you don't have the strength of information to be making such far reaching statements as to say that the country will soon be at third world status, or whatever it was you said...
What I find telling about your position is that you still haven't responded to my query about why ANY media outlet would report anything BUT the sensational stories - which, by the way, support your position only by omission of the positive stories. Which kinda blows your 'alignment with the mainstream media across the globe' outta the water and exposes it for what it is.....
Nothing more but an attempt to sell more copy - you know the saying - if it bleeds, it leads.....

Yes, that's a good analogy. Both cars and handguns are specifically designed to kill people.
No one on either side of the argument believes that these crazies can be stopped - they're going to kill eventually. The point is that this guy should not have been able to walk into a gun shop and buy a gun. Period. A non-citizen, red-flagged by the justice system. That needs to be fixed. That's the only point here. Make him buy a gun in the black market. It would be harder for him. A few crazies would be too crazy to get it together and a life or two would be saved. The black market for weapons will always exist, whether there's gun control or not.
Rabid gun lovers would rather people die needlessly than give up their automatic weapons.

My story about my sister was indeed anecdotal, but it was only an example of how these are never reported. Ask yourself this now - what if she DID call the news about it. What do you think the chances are that itwould be reported? Where's the story for them?
I can imagine the conversation going something like this -
"I escaped being mugged today using my .38 to stop the guys from attacking me in a dark parking lot. I saw 3 guys following me and so I took it out and held alongside my leg so that they could see that I can defend myself. There's been several in the area the last few weeks and we had a visit from a public service officer warning us about it so I was prepared."
"Was anybody shot? Were the popo called?"
"No, I got in my car and drove away."
"Ok, we'll get back to you if we need any more information."
Dontcha think that's how it would go?
Perhaps I have been too harsh in blaming liberals directly.
First, I would blame the media, for they want to sell copy and make money - that is their first priority. The fact that they are dominated by liberals and gun control issues are something they believe in runs a distant 2nd....
