You are conflating completely different issues. One is on individuals taking personal responsibility. Totally agree. But that was not the point here. If your postulation applies to retail traders then paying sponsors are exempt from taking personal responsibility to act with integrity and honesty? I don't think so.

I did a quick test on this but the difference seems less dramatic on first sight. The divergence happened at the start of the .com-crisis, but quickly dissapeared, or faded. (could be making error, am tired)
r_cc (blue) = cum. return close t+1/close t
r_co (orange) = cum. return close t/open t+1
r_oc (grey) = cum. return open t/close t
