Not scared.. a better word would be lazy. It's so damn easy to hit the drive-thru or take-out and grab a bite to eat. I often get a salad or something, but it's not real filling. Society just isn't set up for vegetarians.
I think eventually the whole world will be vegetarian because of
- diseases animals get. something like 1/3 or more chickens have salmonella, which is why you have to cook it so well. beef scares seem to be getting more and more frequent. hoof and mouth disease? who wants to deal with that???
- economics. meat is expensive and doesn't keep well. grains and fruits and vegetables keep much better, and in most cases have their own protective skin.
- cruelty to animals. if everyone had to watch a video or make a personal visit to a slaughterhouse, i bet 50%+ would no longer eat meat.
slightly off-topic, but most kids who torture/torment animals will grow up to be abusers. that means some form of domestic violence, beating their kids, violence toward others, etc. it seems people either respect *ALL* living things, or they don't respect *ANY*.
These are good points ... this reminds me of why I passed on a deep sea fishing trip last weekend, as fishing, imo, is cruelty to animals....however, I have always struggled with the "respect for all living things" aspect...aren't vegetables and fruit also living things when they are picked/eaten????? "All living things" should not differentiate between animal or plant, should it??.....any opinions???
FWIW, I read somewhere that humans are the only animals that (routinely) share their food with other animals....
