Help needed: New trading laptop

Do NOT BUY ANYTHING unless you have an emergency. Buying something now is one thing - utterly stupid.

Wait for the Windows 8 generation of Laptops that will come out end of October to end of the year.

Not because of Windows 8.

But because a LOT of new technology (hardware) is coming. CHips husing half the power (Ivy Bridge) and quite powerfull Atoms (Dual core + Hyperthreading). You finally wil lbe able to get Windows Tablets with 8-10 hours range - and I talk of x86, not ARM.

Windows 8 is a MAJOR release, and a lof of hardware has been "delayed" to go out in a hugh push.

I may upgrade to a small 64gb ssd with a second 500gb 7200rpm hdd. Does that seem wise?

you mean external hdd? that works I guess.

I just use a 128gb ssd

I have requirements other than trading alone, but I've pretty much decided to go with the Lenovo ThinkPads.

I'll probably get the 15" T430s which has no discrete GPU, but comes with Thunderbolt. I may try the optional portable USB-based external 14" display even though resolution is limited.

I can also recommend the ThinkPad W530. Which you can run up to 4 displays at once with a dock.

Lenovo (formerly IBM PC division) has always had reliable machines and great support (including on-site). They were also the most profitable PC manufacturer last quarter.

Where are you buying your lenovos?

Look at these reseller ratings on lenovo.com if I buy direct:
