Hedge Fund Millionaire Robert Wilson Has Died After Reported Suicide

Quote from blakpacman:

He was among the all time great investors of his era, and a great guy overall as seen by the activities after he made his fortune.
RIP.

+1

Funny thing is I have been thinking about Robert the past few days! I first read about him in The Money Masters by John Train (must be well over 15 years ago). But just a few days ago I came across his name when i was reading Inside the House of Money by Drobny. I googled his name to see what he was up, didn't find much.

Anyway:

RIP Robert Wilson

plus you probably get a real rush for the last few seconds of your life.

I do beleive that has a lot to do with his method of choice. That is not easy to do.
And here we are left to fret over a single mouse click. Buy/Sell (1 or 2)
Im plunging large tommorrow!

He was mostly a short seller, which is pretty astonishing - how many wealthy short sellers are there?

Hard to find anything to disagree with in this interview:

"What a lot of rich people do is dump it on their colleges. They give Harvard another desperately needed $100 million for its endowment. They do it because it’s easy, and it’s uncontroversial."

"Roman Catholic schools give a better education to their students than public schools do."

"I find the term giving back an offensive one."

"It’s easy for rich white people to throw money at disadvantaged black people—whether it’s here or in Africa—and feel good about it. I call that solving the white man’s burden. Let me be straight: I do not disapprove, in any way, of aiding black people in need. What I am critical of is unfocused and lavish spending on blacks as blacks. "

He went from $15,000 to $800 million... then decided to give most of it away to help others. Then upon living into his 80's -- a lifespan that many don't even reach -- he decides to call game over and take his own life when he realized that his health was beyond repair.

WHAT A LIFE! I HAVE TOTAL 100% RESPECT FOR THIS MAN.

Knowing when to quit is an art. The last thing I want is to be kept alive with tubes as those around me pretends that is life. Be sure to give a Health Care Proxy to someone you trust to pull the damn plug when the tipping point is reached.

I gave one to my wife and she said I better not get a hangnail. But that is another story for another post!!

He went from $15,000 to ~ $70,000 the first 9 years or so (1950 to 1959), then from $70,000 to tens of millions in around 20 years. From late 1970s to 1986 his tens of millions multiplied to $200 million. From $200 million to $800 million resulted from his investing in hedge funds 1986 to 2000. Besides Richard Dennis, Robert Wilson was one of the exceedingly rare individuals to be able to increase his wealth to hundreds of millions or near billion solely from compounding his own capital starting from a small capital base and without the benefit of opm from outside investors.
I wouldn't really call him a "Hedge Fund Millionaire" since that suggests he was running a fund with OPM.
