Perhaps the best speculation is that the stratosphere is cooling because Ozone levels are improving... thanks to us putting the kibosh on you air condition sales people.

Another is that at this stage adding more co2 is causing cooling because co2 becomes logarithmically less warming in the lower atmosphere... but in the upper atmosphere it is causing cooling because it is returning more and more of the suns rays back into space.

Why do you pretend there is settled science in areas that science has very incomplete knowledge?

( I realize that for those who have the ability to apply science to systems...
the obvious argument would be if that co2 were responsible it would not be cooling in the upper atmosphere but warming because capturing and emitting energy causes warming. However my analysis is guessing that in a dynamic system at some point co2 starts to form a cooling shield.)

this whole thing is getting really old. The only question, the only debate should be, "How much does man made co2 contribute to global warming?"

Loyek, I certainly don't want to accuse you of being brilliant, but yes, THAT is the important, immediate question, because we are about to spend billions doing things that it appears will have no measurable effect. So why are we doing these things, before we have answered "the question"?

Ultimately it would be nice to know if the Earth, on average, is warming or cooling, how the warming or cooling is distributed, and certainly what are the important driving forces. But for now, we might save ourselves a lot of expense and embarrassment if we answered the question of whether increasing CO2 is causing warming, before jumping off the cliff we are, like a gaggle of mindless lemmings, heading for.

It seems to me the question has already been answered definitively. There are, however, those still claiming that slightly elevated CO2, on a nominal basis, not a misleading relative basis, is causing warming. The burden should be on them to explain how it is that their claim can be true in the face of the many observations contradicting it. It is not an explanation to assert that the experienced and well trained scientists who are questioning the role of CO2, based on hard facts, are a bunch of lunatics.

Jerm, the stratosphere is cooling because the increasing greenhouse effect is retaining heat in the troposphere preventing it's release into the stratosphere.

Thus it is additional proof of the increasing greenhouse effect.
