You have got to be kidding. Only 1/3 of house bluedog democrats voted for the bill. The senate will need all 20 bluedog senators to vote for the bill to even have a chance of passing it. There is no chance of even a mild public option bill passing.
Although I guess if you convince more Americans that they are indeed fucked then there will be an even stronger opposition to Democrats.
I've studied American History from our beginnings and admit to a bit of swelling with pride when I think those people are our ancestors. What they did.. and what they risked for the principle.
My family, including me, have a substantial history of military service. I'm confident in saying, "we've done our share".
But when I think about what America has morphed into, I just wanna PUKE!
We're screwed. It's free ice cream and sooner or later a majority of voters will have the wisdom of school kids:

The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade this year. The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president.
We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote. To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members.
We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.
The class had done a great job in their selections.
Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia's mother.
The day arrived when they were to make their speeches Jamie went first.
He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Everyone applauded. He sat down and Olivia came to the podium. Her speech was concise. She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream." She sat down.
The class went wild. "Yes! Yes! We want ice cream." She surely could say more. She did not have to.
A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn't sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it? She didn't know. The class really didn't care. All they were thinking about was ice cream.
Jamie was forgotten.
Olivia won by a landslide.
Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and fifty-two percent of the people reacted like nine year olds. They want ice cream.
The other forty-eight percent of us know we're going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess.

Once the wags can vote the Treasury into their pocket, everyone or at least a majority, becomes nine year olds clamoring after the ice cream truck...
I think this points to why socialist progressives (Democrats and some wishy washy Repubs) over time have won the game, at least until the system collapses.
They trade votes for promises of goodies, and the other side (conservatives, etc.) cannot duplicate and do not want to because they do not believe in it, knowing it is destructive, but end up losing over time due to this phenomena.
Social and economic liberals, running as Democrats, pass system ginning government programs like Social Security, Medicare, and now Universal Health Care, via promising goodies, then the populace gets hooked on the "freebies" they think they are getting, and the same politicians threaten them by crying the other side is always trying to "take their benefits away" to induce continued support.
In other words, it is a big con shell game that they play to obtain a built in election advantage over the conservatives, which ensures they will be in power most of the time.
Until the GOP and or conservatives and other constitutional defending types get a grip on stopping these power plays, they cannot win with the deck being progressively stacked against them. They are fighting the current on stat-ism that is expanding, not contracting, etc.
