Too bad I'll be sitting at the screen trying to make some money today. On Vet's day, there are freebies for vets in lots of places... free car wash, free meals, gun range time, etc. Always a nice thing when people and businesses show their appreciation. I didn't serve because I wanted anything back. I thought it my duty and was part of my "skin in the game" to be an American*. (Don't know why but I'm annoyed by people saying, "thank you for your service". Rubs me a bit wrong as it seems patronizing. Dunno, probably shouldn't feel that way about it.)
*My dad and his 3 brothers all served in their generation of WW II. Fortunately none of them died. The only one wounded was my dad who lost hearing in one ear when an enemy bomb exploded on his ship.
Scat...Funny you should say that. I too have always felt the phrase "thank you for your service" is cliche and overused. It lacks conviction and oftentimes sounds fake to me, although I'm sure its truly heartfelt.
Your post got me thinking about what I could say the next time someone says that to me.

"Thank you for your service".
"No sir...thank you".
..."Thank you for great job training".
..."Thank you for great benefits, good pay, and for taking care of my family while I was gone".
..."Thank you letting me see the world and truly experience how lucky we are here no matter how much people bitch".
..."Thank you for teaching me that with hard work comes advancement, and commensurate pay".
..."Thank you for teaching me the importance of punctuality".
..."Thank you for teaching me that my word is my honor".
..."Thank you for teaching me that if I f*ck up, there are consequences".
..."Thank you for teaching me that I alone am responsible for my financial situation".
..."Thank you for teaching me the importance of loyalty---- and giving me dozens of lifelong friends".
..."Thank you for allowing me to serve my country"
..."And most importantly, thank you for teaching a boy to become a man".
If the left wants to forgive student loans, hand out free college, and subsidized medical coverage....perhaps we should have some "thank you's" coming our way with some mandatory service that serves to make many of these whining millennials real men, real women, and real Americans that understand what we have and what was given to have what we have. And make them thankful too.
JMHO... And btw..... "thank you".
