I assume Christie noem is trying to do away with that.
You meant Kristi Noem.
She challenged one of those bills by President Jimmy Carter involving the Indigenous Americans having the right to
self-determination when
she demanded the reservations (private property) should stay open during the Pandemic when the Indigenous closed the roads
to their land and put up detour signs that take none residents around the reservations to prevent tourism when they didn't have adequate running water and hospitals to care for those sick with severe Covid illness.
- Yet, it was OK for Trump to lock down the entire country and put up walls on the southern border...both she supported.
She doesn't understand the history in America of the European colonists that used diseases as
biological weapons against the Indigenous to force individuals off their land
or cause death to take the land.
I can't remember which Republican educated her about Christopher Columbus and his name...Columbus (Cristobal Colon); the Christian colonizer to Indigenous when he moved to Spain and then changed his name to Cristobal Colon but then became known as
Christ Bearer to the colonists.
Also, the rest of the world used the phrase
Native or
Indigenous except for the United States for several hundred years.
Fast forward, she eventually conceded to her own party and the left by tweeting out "Happy Native American Day".
- "I'm proud of our state's rich Native American heritage. South Dakota sets aside a day each October to recognize that legacy." Happy Native American Day!
Until then, almost all ethnic groups in America had their own celebrations. The biggest one I ever attended is St. Patrick's Day in Chicago...us kids were asked to wear something green to school or wear traditional Irish clothing as respect for the culture. A few years earlier, I remember as a kid in South Dakota...Czech Days and Danish Days were big cultural celebrations in South Dakota.
- South Dakota even has German Schmeckfest Day to celebrate their culture and traditions.
Kids in elementary school, including
Indigenous youths, were asked to dress up as Czech or Danish on those cultural days in South Dakota. In contrast, the Indigenous are
not asking Kristi Noem or anyone to dress up in Indigenous cultural clothing to go to school on Indigenous Day or to wear traditional Indigenous cultural clothing in neighborhood celebrations.
As a relative at a meeting stated perfectly during the lockdowns in the Pandemic...we're not going to legally change your name to Indigenous as you did too many of our grandparents in Native American schools to strip them of their identity by legally (forcefully) changing their Indigenous names to Catholic names...our great mother's name was changed to Maria by the U.S. government and the Catholic church.
Heck, even the same "Sioux" was given by the French fur trader explorers from its original of Nadowessioux. From that point on, name changing became a common practice by the Catholic church (missionaries) and later by the U.S. government as a way to civilize the native population.
Yeah, the above info about the name changing and origination isn't taught in schools in South Dakota (that would be too woke...right ?) but we did learn a lot about Germans, Danish and Czech cultures in school in South Dakota.
Regardless,
they just wanted Kristi Noem to stay off their fucking land or mask up until they were given adequate medical facilities to take care of those with severe Covid illness considering indigenous culture is a minority that's very vulnerable in this Pandemic.
